“Beach”

 

 

 

 

 

 

We were almost there,
at the edge of our longing.
All year round, before our baby
was even born, in fact, we dreamed
of the beach, the ocean. And finally
we were there, the four of us,
our feet embedded into the
white sand, our skin bathed by
the morning light. We were alone,
and the water was clear. But
all we managed to do was dip baby’s
legs into the shallow sea for a brief instant.
He stared at the tide, startled, fascinated
by so much water. Then we headed back
to the cottage to renew our dream.
