“That Day”

Flower Art Digital Painting Background By Lucy Baldwin

That morning as I sat outside our room
near the beach, I noticed that the sound
of the waves from the shore was

indistinguishable from the sound of the leaves
from the trees, if not for the regular rhythm
of the water. That afternoon as we stood in front

of lola’s tomb waiting for the masons to finish
mixing cement with sand and water,
I noticed that the sound of our grief was

indistinguishable from the sound of our prayers
if not for the occasional sighing and sobbing. That evening
as I laid outside our cottage along the shore, I noticed

that the rustling of the leaves from the nearby mountain was
indistinguishable from the sound of the sea breaking against
the sand if not for the unpredictable melody of the branches.
