I. About the Company
Who doesn’t love pizza? We all do. I myself have been a fan of pizza for as long as I can remember. But I have always bought them ready-made from pizzerias. I realized that the time has come for me to learn to make my own pizza. The advantage of this is that, first, I will be able to make a pizza personalized according to my taste. And second, I will be able to save more money. Making your own pizza is more cost-effective than constantly ordering one from your favorite pizza parlor.
So I did some research and came across the Uuni brand of pizza oven. They have this portable pizza oven called the Uuni 3 Pizza Oven. It looks really neat and cleanl! It has three legs and one long chimney. It looks like a miniature version of the gigantic ovens you see in pizza restaurants.
I did a quick background check of the manufacturer of the oven and found out that it was founded in 2011 in Scotland by a guy named Kristian Tapaninaho. It turns out that “Uuni” actually literally means “oven” in Finnish. The first model of the Uuni pizza oven was the first-ever portable wood-fueled pizza oven in the world, which is awesome, since that means they are innovators in the technology of pizza oven.
Uuni has also won several awards as the best product of its kind in London.
Another thing I discovered about the company is that it seems to practice the principle of sustainability. For example, the fuel that powers the Uuni 3 ovens are sustainable wood pellets. They don’t contain harmful additives, which is great, because I’m always conscious about what goes into cooking my food. They also are committed to making the world a greener place by planting thousands of trees in their part of the world. That is something very admirable in a company.
II. Advantages of the Uuni 3
The Uuni 3 pizza oven is great in two respects: first, in its design, and second, in its functionality.
Design-wise, it looks really sleek and minimalist. As I’ve said, it looks a bit like a miniature version of the large pizza ovens you see in pizzerias or pizza parlors. Its dimensions are just enough – not too big and not too small. It can fit nicely on a picnic table or on top of a counter in an outdoor kitchen. I have a “dirty kitchen” in my house and I’m thinking of putting it there. The weight is also not that heavy. As I recall, it’s a little over 13 kg. So you can bring it anywhere with you if you want to have a picnic. It is also supported by three legs. If I’m not mistaken, the earlier models had four legs. It’s good that they modified it to three legs. Three legs seem to provide better balance to the pizza oven, and it can be placed on top of most surfaces.
Functionality-wise, it has some great or impressive features. First of all, the temperature inside the oven can go as high up as around 500 degrees Celsius. And it does that very quickly, so that it only takes more or less ten minutes to pre-heat the oven, and an additional 60 seconds to thoroughly cook the pizza. Think about hat! With the Uuni 3 pizza oven, it only takes literally a minute to cook pizza. That’s super fast. That’s twice as fast as many pizza ovens out there in the market. The fuel that fires the oven are wood pellets, and they of course far safer and more natural than gas or electric.
What accounts for the efficiency in the heating inside the oven? I found out that it’s due to the oven’s insulated body. Heat is evenly distributed inside so the entire pizza is cooked evenly at once. The oven’s pellet burner also plays a huge part in ensuring that the high temperature inside the oven is consistently maintained. There is also a new addition to the Uuni 3 model, and that is this thing called a chimney clip, which enables you to more efficiently keep and pack the oven. In other words, in enhances the portability of the oven.
The dimensions inside the oven are also bigger compared to other ovens of its kind. It enables you to cook 13”-sized pizzas. I think 13” is just the perfect size for pizzas. Due to the fact that it heats up really high and super fast, you can easily feed a large group of guests in a matter of a few minutes. You don’t even have to restrict your menu to pizzas. The oven can also cook a variety of foods: pork, chicken, fish, even veggies. You can enhance your pizzas by adding these foods to your meals.
The body of the Uuni 3 oven is made of stainless steel. That takes care of the problem of rust. It will never rust and will probably last many decades. I’ve heard of horror stories before of pizza ovens which did not last for more than two years. And they are far more expensive, too, than the Uuni 3 oven. That explains why these pizza ovens often have a warranty of not more than a year. They break up after a year, or not more than two years. They may have cool features like LCD screens and interior lighting, but they malfunction before long. As a result, they become ineffective, or worse, dangerous. I’ve read of reviews of these pizza ovens wherein the LCD suddenly shuts off which prevented their users from seeing their pizza’s current temperature and the duration of their cooking. As a result, the pizzas gets overcooked or totally burns up.
With the Uuni 3 pizza oven you just get what was promised – a delicious pizza oven-baked by natural wood. I think it greatly affects the quality or taste of the pizza when it’s burned by wood or not.
The only potential disadvantage that I see of the Uuni 3 pizza oven is its price. It may at first look a bit pricey. But if you compare it with other ovens of its kind, and especially if you consider that it has a lot of really cool features, the price is very reasonable. For sure, it’s far less expensive than the more popular electric pizza ovens out there. If you value a product’s high quality and its sustainability, then the price should not be an issue. And even if you are price-conscious, the Uuni 3 is still very affordable.
Considering the advantages of the Uuni 3’s design, functionality, and features, it’s definitely worth buying. It’s probably the only pizza oven you will need for a very long time.
