“Before I Can Write Good Poems”

Before I can write good poems
I must first write awful poems
And I must have the courage for it.
I must first be willing to be laughed at
And scorned by the good poets.
I must first be naive enough to believe
That I can write poetry. Poetry
That can sing. Poetry that can fly
Off my mouth like a thousand colored butterflies
Or birds. Poetry that can soar and pierce
Hearts like a silver-coated arrow.
