“Single Again”

And there we were
The two of us
Finally alone.
We took a detour
Out of the mall
And stepped into
The dark alley.
We walked like we
Were single again,
Our hands clasped,
Our fingers locked.
We passed by
Unfamiliar shops
And ended up in
A square paved
With red bricks.
To celebrate our
Accidental freedom
We ordered food
We don’t usually eat:
Kebab, Greek salad,
Imported root beer
And cherry-flavored soda.
On our way home,
In the darkness
Of the car,
We each savored
In our quite way
The taste of meat,
Lettuce, black olive,
Salad dressing,
And white onion
In our mouths.
