“Christmas”

Pen and paper

I appreciate our neighbors.
They seem to empathize
With our sorrow.
Though it is Christmas eve
The streets are dark and empty.
The series lights are barely noticeable.
The houses are silent.
No music is heard.
No firecracker is lit.
But in the far distance
I hear the muffled sound
Of voices singing.
And the cold air
Carries the faint smell of gunpowder.
